History & Mission Statement
In 2001 the Belgian Association of Regional Anesthesia (BARA) was founded by a group of dedicated anesthetists interested in regional anesthesia. The purpose of this new association was to stimulate the development of and teaching in regional anesthesia techniques in its broadest sense. Rapidly, the BARA became one of the largest organizations of anesthesia in Belgium with more than 600 active members at the end of 2015.
The basis of the BARA is formed by four working parties: peripheral nerve blocks, central nerve blocks, obstetric anesthesia and epidemiology. Each working party organizes regional teaching sessions and stimulates clinical and experimental research. Furthermore the BARA wants to serve the anesthesia community by providing medicolegal assistance to the anesthesia care provider in Belgium.
